Once dipped, the item is rinsed with water to remove any excess film residue and then left to dry completely. After drying, a clear coat is applied to seal the design and provide added protection. This top layer can be glossy, matte, or satin, depending on the desired finish, and it helps protect the surface from UV rays, scratches, and general wear. Once the clear coat cures, the item is fully finished and ready for use, now sporting a durable and professionally applied hydro dipped design.

Next, a hydrographic film printed with the desired pattern is carefully placed onto the surface of warm water in a dipping tank. After it sits for a short time, a chemical activator is sprayed over the film. This dissolves the film backing, leaving the ink design floating on the water’s surface. The item is then slowly dipped into the tank at a controlled angle, allowing the floating pattern to wrap seamlessly around its surface. Skilled technique during this step ensures a smooth, even application with minimal distortion or air bubbles.

After priming, the item receives a base coat of paint, which serves as the background color beneath the hydrographic film. This coat is usually applied using automotive-grade paint to ensure longevity and resistance to wear. The base color significantly influences the final appearance of the pattern, so it’s chosen to complement the design in the film. The item is then left to dry thoroughly before moving on to the dipping stage.

Before any hydro dipping can begin, the item must be properly prepared to ensure the film adheres correctly. This starts with a thorough cleaning to remove dust, oils, and contaminants using degreasers or alcohol-based cleaners. Depending on the material, the surface may also be lightly sanded or scuffed to help the coatings stick more effectively. Once clean, a primer is applied to promote better adhesion, particularly on plastics or metals. This foundational step is critical for durability and a flawless final result.
